SLIDE PRESENTATIONS

 David has compiled several slide presentations of the local area which he has been showing to audiences for many years. New programmes are being introduced all the time and are listed below. He is available to speak at functions during the morning, afternoon or evening. If you need a speaker at the last minute please contact us and check availability. Talks can be adapted to suit the needs of individual organisations, schools, clubs or any group of people but generally last between 45 and 60 minutes. Each presentation contains around 50 slides with a commentary. The slides date from the last half of the 19th century onwards.

 

1. Victorian & Edwardian Shrewsbury:   This talk includes rare views of Shrewsbury from 1842 until 1911.

2. Shrewsbury News:  A look at events in Shrewsbury over the last 150 years. Flower Shows, Carnivals, Parades, Floods, Visiting Royalty and much much more!

3. Shrewsbury, The Twentieth Century:   A look at the County Town from 1901 up to 2000. In two parts, Part One 1901-1946. Part Two 1947-2000.

4. The River Around Shrewsbury:  A trip down the Severn from Shelton to the Weir, looking at the bridges, buildings, boats, ferries and floods that have affected the river over the centuries.

5. Lost Shrewsbury:  A detailed look at Shrewsbury from 1939 until 1965. This presentation is within living memory and charts the changes to the town during this period when many fine buildings were demolished.

6. A Shrewsbury Kaleidoscope:  The variety of life in the County Town mainly between 1930 and 1960 with some earlier views included.

7. The Suburbs of Shrewsbury:  The suburbs of the town have a fascinating history, which is covered in this talk by over fifty slides.

8. The Parish of the Holy Cross:  The story of the Abbey to the building of the Column and the new Shirehall. This talk also covers Monkmoor and the area around St. Giles Church.

9. Frankwell-The Little Boro:  This presentation looks at Frankwell before the demolition of the 1960s. There are pictures of the old buildings, local characters, floods and the famous Frankwell Carnival.

10. The Making of A Christmas Carol:  This presentation shows how the film was made, profiles the stars, looks at the different sets used around the county and also tells the well loved tale written by Charles Dickens.

11. Telford One:  A close look at the five towns and the smaller villages and hamlets that have been woven together to form the new town of Telford. All the photographs show the area in the last century, before Telford existed.

12. Telford Two:  A view of Telford from the middle of the 19th century until the building of the new town. This presentation looks at the old towns and villages, industry, people, events and the early signs of a new town.

13. South Shropshire:  A tour through one of the most beautiful parts of the county, looking at the major towns and villages, shopping, industry and events in a unique set of photographs dating from around 1860 to 1970.

14. North Shropshire:  A look at the old towns of Oswestry, Ellesmere, Wem, Market Drayton and Whitchurch and of the many villages in between. A set of slides charting the historical and social changes in North Shropshire between 1860 and 1970.

15. Stretton Vale:  A journey around Church Stretton, All Stretton, Little Stretton, the Long Mynd and surrounding villages.

GUIDED WALKS

Guided walks can be arranged for groups and are listed below. All walks are leisurely and last approximately two hours.

1. Shrewsbury within the Loop of The Severn:  A close look at the history and the old buildings of the county town.

2. The Suburbs:  Trace the history of one of Shrewsbury's fascinating suburbs. Choose from Abbey Foregate and Cherry Orchard, Frankwell, Kingsland, Coleham and Belle Vue or Castle Foregate and Castlefields.

3. The Severn around Shrewsbury:  From Frankwell Quay to the Weir, trace the fascinating history of the river as it flows through the county town.
