 SHROPSHIRE AREA

David has been collecting old photographs of Shrewsbury and Shropshire and researching their history for more than 40 years. As a result he gives slide presentations and leads guided walks around the areas covered. For a more permanent record to share with everyone he has had several books published. We aim to list them all on these pages so that you can purchase relevant copies from your local bookshop, or click on the appropriate link to buy online.

 LUDLOW AND SOUTH-WEST SHROPSHIRE
RAY FARLOW AND DAVID TRUMPER

This book is the first venture for David and Ray. Ray is a well known postcard collector in the area and the two of them have got together to produce this most interesting volume. The area covered by the book is south of Shrewsbury and roughly west of a line from the county town down through Ludlow. It is a land containing a huge variety of scenery: rich fertile valleys, open barren moors and heathland, undulating foothills to the heights of the Long Mynd and the boulder strewn Striperstones. Within this section there is the beautiful town of Ludlow, as well as the smaller market towns of Bishops Castle, Clun, Craven Arms and Church Stretton. Hundreds of settlements can be found nestling in these quiet secluded valleys, ranging from the larger villages such as Pontesbury, Minsterley, Dorrington and Bucknell to the smaller hamlets of Newcastle-on-Clun, the Bog and Lydbury North. Ancient fortifications such as Clun and Hopton castles and the fortified manor house at Stokesay, grand houses and estates such as Plowden Hall and Whitton Court, and fine buildings like Downton Castle and Stokesay Court dot the countryside. This volume of many previously unseen postcard views of the county is sure to appeal to anyone with an interest in this beautiful corner of the world.

PAST & PRESENT SHROPSHIRE
DAVID TRUMPER

Shropshire Past and Present

This book gives a fascinating insight into the dramatic changes that have taken place in the country over the past 100 years. Shropshire Past & Present recalls houses and public buildings, shops, churches and pubs that have vanished or been changed almost beyond all recognition. The changing types transport and fashion, together with the developing character of streets and districts as they took on the form that is familiar today are all depicted in this interesting collection of photographs. The astonishing periods of growth that occurred during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, and since the Second World War, are particularly well illustrated. Many aspects of the changing area are recalled- hospitals and schools, places of work and recreation, parks and squares, suburban streets and the main thoroughfares - and the pictures record the ceaseless building and rebuilding that characterises the county today. David has combined a remarkable selection of archive photographs with modern views of the same scenes in order to record the transformation that has occurred. The book will add to the knowledge, appreciation and enjoyment of all those who take an interest in this distinctive county.

SOUTH SHROPSHIRE
DAVID TRUMPER

South Shropshire in Old Photographs (Britain in Old Photographs)

South Shropshire is an area of contrasting beauty. Bordering Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Wales, this region has seen great turmoil in the past, as the ruined castles and fortifications testify. But over the centuries it has sunk into quiet obscurity, prompting A E Houseman to write "In valley of springs and rivers, By Onny and Teme and Clun, The country for easy livers, The quietest under the sun." This book chronicles the history of the area and the people who worked, lived and played here, in a fascinating sequence of photographs dating from the 1860s to the 1980s.
